"I have had neck/upper back pain since suffering from meningitis a couple of years ago. After getting nowhere with a variety of treatments, I started practising yoga with Joy around a year ago and have never looked back.
Joy is a truly inspirational teacher and her lessons, both private and in groups, are thoroughly enjoyable and highly effective. I have always thought of myself as the least flexible person in the world (probably the result of many traumatic gym lessons at school!) but Joy has given me new found confidence and I get a real sense of achievement after lessons. Joy helps me to focus on the progress I am making (however small) and my back pain is definitely abating.
My biggest problem has been making regular lessons as my job involves so much travelling. The Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit is, therefore, perfect as I can practise in my own time (and place!). The Toolkit is so well designed and the postures are so clearly explained that there's no excuse for not practising! I particularly like the suggested ten minute plans - it sometimes feels daunting trying to squeeze an hour into the day but ten minutes is so manageable. "I loved the photographs and instructions. Both detailed and careful, meaning even a beginner would be able to follow them. I have been doing yoga for many years so am familiar with the postures, but I found Joy's selection of those that are beneficial for back pain relief very helpful.
I have had a chronically bad back most of my life. It has ‘settled' as arthritis of the lower spine, thus it comes and goes, depending on my fitness/flexibility and how I treat my back! I found Joy's idea of starting slowly with 10 minutes a day and then adding 10 more minutes per day each week, very clever! The postures are simple and the regularity is easy to integrate into my days, by doing it gradually.
I thought all was going so well and I was improving daily and then I did something that ‘put my back out.' I went back to the beginning using the first set of postures Lesson 1, Surrender Pose, and to my surprise was able to move much more easily immediately after just one set. So I'm living proof that it works!
I'm still taking it gently but I'm still able to do those first steps and have faith that in a week or so the pain will go and I will go back to progressing my practise. Joy's Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit has taught me to fully respect the fact that I do have a chronic problem and that I must handle with care! Nevertheless I hope for full mobility again, helped by this wonderful Toolkit.

"Thank you so much for your Back Pain Tool Kit I've taken a look and I'm afraid the news is good and bad!
The bad news is I'm never going to be able to get down to doing the yoga because the Toolkit is too damn entertaining. Once I started flipping through, I couldn't stop! Talk about eye candy! Every page is a visual treat - I'm looking forward to the DVD!
The Good News is when I eventually got the next button under control, I discovered that it really is all there, isn't it? What a wealth of information! And what wonderful personal stories!
One senses you have been there - and beaten it!

"This Toolkit is exquisite. It is so beautifully laid out and inspirational that I would feel like I was letting it and Joy, as well as myself down if I were not to practice every day!! It nurtures you. The pictures and words are like having a massage - so calming. The love and care that has gone into its creation is evident and demonstrates how much Joy is eager to share her story to give her readers a better quality of life.
Module 1 has enabled me to understand my condition in a way that a doctor did not explain.
Module 2 the exercises are explained clearly, both visually and with text. I like the statement ‘don't sacrifice the body for the sake of the posture' - it's about doing what you can - ‘little and often'. You don't look at this toolkit and feel defeated before you start! It has made such a difference to me - somebody recently said that I no longer carried my back pain in my eyes.

Learning about Joy's story and how she found yoga and dealt with her pain, I can now understand her teaching much better. I find it very touching and admire her strength.
Joy is talking straight about how disciplined and patient you have to be when working with your body. Creating a fundamental understanding with going into the chakras, the exercises in the practical part are well explained and supported by images to understand the postures on a deeper level. Once you have looked into every posture in detail, the example lessons inspire to start straight away!"

"Having lumbered myself 6 months ago with Achilles tendonitis to add to my long-standing chronic lower back problems, I became a somewhat reluctant convert to yoga practice on the basis that ‘something had to be done and there was nothing to lose'. Joy's class-based yoga practice finds me no longer a reluctant convert but a keen advocate! Downward dog sorted the tendonitis over time and the very doable range of poses, stretches and yoga breathing has fixed the back pain along with attention to posture in everyday situations. One night of slouching or sitting unsupported does allow the back to remind me it's still there, but at least I now have a way of addressing it through a few simple poses.
The toolkit has been great to sustain the effort out of class with the Summary of Positions in Module 3, being an ideal reminder and the Example Lessons an ever handy tool to use at home. I am very much looking forward to the voice-over version especially to help the breathing along. Attention to posture, weekly yoga classes and the convenience of the Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit have proved a solution for me, as well as providing an enjoyable and sustainable lifestyle change."

"As a yoga novice, I found The Yoga for Back pain Toolkit very enlightening.
Prior to reading the book, my simple understanding of Yoga was that it was a discipline where one gains relaxation, flexibility and spiritual well-being by doing a series of exercises focusing on the breath as the prime energy source. I was not aware that such a long term debilitating condition such as back pain could be overcome by doing relatively simple pain-free exercises.
Joy is one of the most dedicated professionals I have ever met and has an incredible depth of knowledge of her subject acquired as a result of very thorough research and personal experience.
The part of the book where she describes her own personal battle to overcome severe back pain is quite moving and inspiring.
The format she uses is easy to follow and I find it so refreshing that the people in the photos are not only from varying racial backgrounds but are also all ages. This gives the feeling that everyone is included.
Add to this the wonderful quotes, pictures and amusing videos is what made it so easy to become completely immersed in it.

"Many, many thanks for the opportunity to review the Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit, especially as it really does what it says on the tin! It is a complete system for alleviating and preventing back pain. It's not only extremely accessible, but can it really be this much fun!!
Having suffered with back problems in the past, I can appreciate The Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit can empower and teach me how to prevent future attacks. I've also noticed a general improvement in my health, and every time I do the exercises I definitely get the ‘feel good factor.'
The first thing that struck me was the quality of the images, I thought they were clear, professional and not without humour! The people in the photos seem to have been very well chosen and represent a good cross section of age, ability and lifestyle. They aren't yoga experts, they are just ordinary people having fun; one is even by the pool with a cocktail! Love it!
All the lessons have been prefaced really well, and the instructions are aided by excellent images which are clear and concise enough to not confuse or to patronise you.
The overall layout, including the introduction and explanation of the anatomy, looks for my money, way ahead of any comparable on-line products.
All said and done, I'm damn glad I got me a copy!

"The Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit was easy to follow, clear and well illustrated. I read half of the first section for background information on physiology etc but the most important part was the practical section that started in part 2. In the first 30 days I managed to get into a routine of starting my day with 10 - 20 minutes of gentle exercises, which helped me loosen up and focus for work. I work a lot from home and am seated for long hours. By using the exercises Surrender Pose, Hug Yourself, Dead Sheep and variations, I managed to stretch out my back making sitting and, consequently, working was more comfortable. It also helped me to focus and apply myself to my work - it helped me to get started in the morning. That's why I moved the exercises from the end of the day, when my back pain was worse, to the start of the day.
I have a long way to go to complete the book, and so am only just starting to really treat my back in this way. In some ways the exercises irritate my back, because they are probably tackling the spasm I have which gives me the pain. However I intend to persevere with the whole course, and know that recovery if long lasting, will take long to achieve. Thank you for your efforts in putting this together."

"This is a great book. Well laid out, and just like a good teacher, it's clear you have been there and are passing on the benefits of your experience.
